Siding Replacement or Repair: Which Is Best and When

Your home’s siding is a critical line of defense against the elements, protecting your property while enhancing its curb appeal.

Overview

Your home’s siding is a critical line of defense against the elements, protecting your property while enhancing its curb appeal. However, over time, even the most durable siding can succumb to wear and tear, leaving you with a decision to make: do you repair or replace? This choice carries significant weight, as it can greatly impact your home’s worth, energy consumption, and the overall aesthetic appeal it projects.

To help you make your decision between the two, join Powell Exteriors KC’s experts as we explore the scenarios where siding repair is a viable option and when a complete replacement becomes necessary.

When Siding Repair is Necessary

Sometimes, a full siding replacement isn’t necessary, especially if the damage is minor or isolated to a small area. In these cases, a repair job can be a cost-effective solution that gets the job done without breaking the bank.

Here are some situations where repairing your siding might be the way to go:

Localized Damage

If the damage is confined to a specific section of your siding, such as a few cracked or warped panels, a repair can be a practical solution. Taking this effective band-aid approach can help you save money and minimize disruption to your home.

Aesthetic Concerns

In some cases, siding may be structurally sound but suffer from aesthetic issues like fading or discoloration. When this happens, repainting or replacing a few panels can help restore its original look. The beauty of this approach is that it mimics the results of a complete replacement but at a fraction of the cost—a total win-win for you.

Recent Installation

If your siding was recently installed and is still under warranty, the manufacturer may cover a repair, making it a more cost-effective option than a complete replacement. Premature damage is rare following a new installation, but mistakes happen, and when they do, you’ll want to check in with your warranty provider to see what you’re covered for.

When Siding Replacement is Necessary

While opting for the less expensive option for siding issues may be tempting, there are times when a simple repair just won’t cut it. Sometimes, the damage is too extensive, and you’ve got to bite the bullet and go for a complete siding replacement.

Here are some scenarios where replacing your siding is probably the smarter move:

Extensive Damage

If the damage to your siding is widespread or affects a significant portion of your home, a repair may not be sufficient. Extensive damage can compromise your home’s structural integrity and energy efficiency, making a full replacement the safer and more effective option.

Age and Deterioration

With each passing year, siding becomes increasingly susceptible to wear and tear, and it might not be able to adequately safeguard your home anymore. If your siding is nearing the end of its expected lifespan, a replacement can help ensure your home’s safety and improve its overall appearance.

Energy Efficiency Concerns

Older or damaged siding can lead to higher energy costs resulting from poor insulation and air leakage. Replacing your siding with modern, energy-efficient materials can help regulate your utility bills and improve your home’s overall energy performance. Contemporary siding solutions provide superior insulation and airtight sealing, optimizing thermal performance and reducing strain on heating and cooling systems.

Resale Value

If you’re planning to sell your home in the near future, a siding replacement can be a worthwhile investment. A fresh, updated exterior can significantly enhance the look of your home’s exterior and potentially increase its resale value.

Consider an Inspection to Guide Your Decision

When deciding between siding repair or replacement, several factors must be considered beyond the extent of the damage. If you’re not a licensed technician, it’ll be relatively difficult to determine what the specific damage is and what service is needed to remedy it. In this case, hiring a professional inspection service is just what you need to make the right choice.

Consider the following factors once the inspection has been conducted.

Project Cost

Both repair and replacement have associated costs, including materials, labor, and potential permits. Once you know the extent of the damage and the best course of action, you can calculate the associated cost.

Material and Style

If it’s determined that a replacement is the best option, you’ll have the opportunity to choose a new siding material and style that better suits your preferences and your home’s architectural design. If you feel that the current material style and color have run their course, you can use a replacement service as an excuse to give your home a new look.

Energy Efficiency

An inspection will help you determine whether your siding contributes to inflated energy bills. If it does, a replacement will save you money down the road. Newer siding materials often offer better insulation properties, which can lead to significant energy savings over time. Consider the long-term energy efficiency benefits when evaluating the cost of a replacement.

Disruption and Timeframe

Both repair and replacement projects can cause disruptions to your daily life. However, a full replacement is typically more extensive and may require additional preparation and a longer timeframe. If you have the option for either, you may want to consider project length when making your final decision.

If repairs will suffice and a contractor offers to do the job in one day instead of a week-long project for a replacement, opting for simple repairs is the better option. Additionally, this is the more cost-effective option, so you’ll benefit in many ways.

Work With a Seasoned Siding Professional

Deciding between siding repair or replacement requires careful consideration, including the extent of damage, cost, energy efficiency, and long-term goals. While siding repair is a viable option for localized damage, aesthetic concerns, or recent installations, a full replacement becomes necessary when dealing with extensive damage.

I wish I could give Powell Exteriors 10 stars. Dave came out to the house and listened to what we wanted. He came up with ideas that fit into our budget. We called him several times with modifications and he was quick to return our call and get us the information we needed. We chose to go with their quote even though they were not the cheapest. Dave just made us comfortable with his knowledge, timely responses and the products they could offer. The crew was AMAZING. They showed up around the same time every morning and worked all day. When it was quitting time they stacked all their tools and the supplies neatly and cleaned up after themselves. They even swept the concrete. I have never seen a crew so clean. We tried to stay out of their way but they were polite anytime we had a question. They even came out and painted one of the downspouts to match the house. That was above and beyond. Give them a call you will not be disappointed.

Powell Exteriors completely replaced all the old windows in our house, which is a tricky 2-story. These photos show just a few of the quality windows they installed. We were impressed from the beginning with the strong business ethic when Dave, the co-owner completed our bid, then when Chris followed up with excellent communication about when to expect each step from delivery to installation, then with Jimmy & crew who efficiently and professionally installed each window with care. We love our woodwork, and there was not a scratch in the process as you can see. Small problems came up, as is normal with any home repair project, and they were handled kindly & professionally. With confidence, we completely recommend this company for your exterior project.
